Guinea Pig Haven started with two male guinea pigs, a growing list of questions, and a much bigger idea for the future.
What began as our own journey learning how to give our guinea pigs the space, nutrition, enrichment, companionship, and everyday care they need is growing into a valuable resource for other guinea pig families doing the same.
Here, we share researched guinea pig care information alongside the real-life experience of raising our own guinea pigs.
And we are building toward something bigger.
Our long-term goal is for Guinea Pig Haven to grow into a guinea pig rescue or sanctuary, supported in part by a storefront designed around useful products and resources for guinea pig families.
We are not there yet.
This is the beginning, and we are documenting the journey as it happens.
What Is Guinea Pig Haven?

Guinea Pig Haven is a guinea pig care and lifestyle resource created to help new and growing guinea pig families make informed decisions about everyday care.
You will find practical information about:
- guinea pig care for beginners
- food and nutrition
- housing and cage setup
- bedding and cleaning
- behavior, bonding, & enrichment
- health and grooming
- male guinea pig care
- products and supplies
- our real-life guinea pig journey
The goal is not simply to tell you what guinea pigs need.
We also want to show what putting those recommendations into practice can actually look like in a family home.
How Guinea Pig Haven Started
Like many new guinea pig owners, we quickly discovered that there was much more to guinea pig care than bringing home a cage, food, bedding, and a few accessories.
Questions started appearing almost immediately.
Was the enclosure large enough?
Which bedding would work best long term?
How often should everything be cleaned?
Would washable liners be more practical than disposable bedding?
How could we create a setup that worked well for the guinea pigs while also fitting safely into a household with a young child?
What would our two males need in order to live comfortably together?
Each answer seemed to lead to another question.
Instead of treating that learning curve as something to hide, Guinea Pig Haven is built around documenting it.
We want to share the improvements, experiments, things that work well, things we change, and lessons we learn along the way.
Meet Our Guinea Pigs

At the center of Guinea Pig Haven are our two male guinea pigs.
They are the reason this project exists.
As we get to know their individual personalities, routines, favorite foods, behaviors, and preferences, they will become an important part of the stories and educational content shared here.
You will be able to follow their lives through our Our Guinea Pig Journey section, including:
- cage changes and expansions
- feeding routines
- enrichment
- bonding
- grooming
- products we try
- bedding experiments
- milestones
- everyday guinea pig moments
Some posts will simply document life with them.
Others will help us explore a broader guinea pig care question.
Research First, Experience Alongside It
Guinea Pig Haven is built around an important distinction:
Research tells us what appropriate guinea pig care should look like. Our personal experience shows what putting those recommendations into practice looks like in our household.
Those are not the same thing.
When we publish factual guinea pig care guidance, we research information from appropriate veterinary, scientific, and established animal-welfare sources.
For health-related subjects, veterinary guidance takes priority.
For areas such as housing, social needs, enrichment, and general welfare, we also compare recommendations from respected animal-welfare organizations.
When credible sources disagree, we aim to explain the difference rather than quietly choosing whichever recommendation is easiest to present.
We Are Guinea Pig Owners, Not Veterinarians
Guinea Pig Haven provides educational information.
It is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment from a veterinarian experienced with guinea pigs.
Health articles are designed to help owners better understand preventive care, recognize possible warning signs, and know when veterinary attention may be necessary.
We do not want a search result to convince someone to delay professional care when their guinea pig may be seriously ill.
Our Experience Will Always Be Labeled as Experience
You will often see phrases such as:
In our enclosure…
With our two guinea pigs…
What we noticed…
Our experience so far…
What we would change…
That wording is intentional.
If paper bedding controls odor for a certain amount of time in our enclosure, that does not mean every owner will have exactly the same result.
If our guinea pigs love one enrichment activity and completely ignore another, that does not make either response universal.
Our experience can provide useful context, but it should not be confused with a general care requirement.
Our Guinea Pig Habitat Will Keep Evolving

Housing is one of the first areas we are documenting closely.
Our initial setup quickly led us to learn more about guinea pig space requirements and start planning a larger enclosure.
We chose a modular setup that can grow with our needs, and we plan to document its evolution rather than presenting a single finished cage as the only way to house guinea pigs.
That includes:
- expanding the enclosure
- experimenting with a second level
- changing bedding systems
- comparing disposable bedding with washable pads
- tracking cleaning and maintenance
- observing how our guinea pigs use the space
- evaluating what works well in our household
- changing things that do not
Sometimes the most useful review comes several months after the unboxing video.
That is the kind of experience we want Guinea Pig Haven to capture.
How We Approach Products and Reviews
Guinea pig products are another area where we want to be transparent.
When we discuss a product, we separate three things:
What the manufacturer says
What independent guinea pig care standards recommend
What actually happened when we used the product
When possible, we want reviews to come from meaningful real-world use rather than a few minutes of setup followed by a verdict.
We may document initial impressions, but we will identify them as initial impressions.
Long-term reviews should actually be long term.
If Guinea Pig Haven uses affiliate links in the future, those relationships will be clearly disclosed. A commission will never determine whether we believe a product is appropriate for guinea pigs.
Helping New Guinea Pig Owners Without the Shame
Many people begin guinea pig ownership with products or information they were given by a pet store, breeder, previous owner, friend, or an outdated website.
Sometimes they later discover that something needs to change.
That could mean:
- the cage is too small
- the diet needs improvement
- the bedding is not working
- the guinea pigs need more enrichment
- an owner misunderstood a behavior
- a product marketed for guinea pigs is not actually the best choice
Our approach is simple.
Learn what needs improvement, understand why, and make the next better decision.
Responsible pet care is not about pretending you knew everything from the beginning.
It is about continuing to learn and responding when you know more.
Our Long-Term Mission
Guinea Pig Haven is currently a guinea pig care resource and the story of our own guinea pig family.
But the name represents where we hope this project will eventually go.
Our long-term vision is to establish a guinea pig rescue or sanctuary that can provide safe care for guinea pigs in need.
We also hope to develop a storefront that supports the mission while giving guinea pig families access to thoughtfully selected products and resources.
Those parts of Guinea Pig Haven do not exist yet.
We will not present ourselves as an operating rescue before that becomes a reality.
Instead, we plan to document the process honestly, including the research, preparation, challenges, milestones, and decisions involved in building something capable of helping guinea pigs responsibly.

Our Guinea Pig Journey
The boys, our habitat, experiments, product experiences, milestones, and the ongoing story of building Guinea Pig Haven.
Guinea Pig Haven is still at the beginning.
There will be more guinea pigs to learn from, more questions to research, more things to test, and plenty of changes along the way.
For now, it starts with two little guinea pigs and the decision to keep building something better for them and, eventually, for guinea pigs who need a haven of their own.
